About

It Started with My Own Story

When I was preparing to apply to the University of Chicago, I felt completely overwhelmed. The pressure to craft perfect essays, juggle deadlines, and figure out how to afford a top-tier education left me stressed and anxious.

College Consultant Bethany Goldszer

My parents wanted to help but didn’t know where to start. We were drowning in conflicting advice, generic college admissions books, and the impossible workload of my overextended high school counselor, who had 500+ other students.

I eventually made it to UChicago—but the journey was far more stressful than it needed to be. That experience planted a seed: No student or parent should have to navigate this process alone.

Why I Founded Stand Out College Prep

In 2012, I started Stand Out College Prep with a clear mission: to provide the personalized, expert guidance that I wished I’d had. I wanted to be the calm, knowledgeable partner who could help families in competitive, high-cost-of-living areas navigate the increasingly complex college admissions landscape—without the overwhelm.

Over the past 13 years, I’ve helped more than 2,500 students get into their dream schools and secured over $2.5 million in financial aid and scholarships for families. But beyond the numbers, what drives me is seeing the relief on parents’ faces when they realize they have a trusted expert in their corner—and watching students discover and communicate their authentic selves through powerful applications.

I’ve also been featured by the Smithtown Chamber of Commerce and Launch Grow Joy.

As a regular facilitator for the Science & Technology Entry Program (STEP) at Queensborough Community College, York College, and SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, I stay deeply connected to the needs of diverse student populations across the New York region.

I’m also an active member of NACAC (National Association for College Admission Counseling) and NYSACAC (New York State Association for College Admission Counseling), where I maintain the highest professional standards and stay current with the latest changes in college admissions.

My Philosophy

I believe that every student has a unique story worth telling. My job isn’t to manufacture a “perfect” applicant or game the system. Instead, I help students discover and articulate their authentic selves in ways that resonate with admissions committees.

I also believe that the college admissions process shouldn’t destroy family relationships. That’s why I become the project manager—so parents can step back into their role as cheerleaders and emotional supporters, rather than deadline enforcers.
